Brief Bio-note

Prof. S.R. Shankapal is the first Vice Chancellor of M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences (MSRUAS) established in the year 2013. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from University of Mysore with a postgraduate degree from IIT Madras and PhD degree from BITS Pilani.

Earlier to becoming Vice Chancellor of the University, he served as Director, later President of M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies (MSRSAS) which was established in 1999. MSRSAS offered postgraduate engineering and management and PhD degree programmes in collaboration with Coventry University of the UK. The School also offered training, engineering consultancy, product development, testing and validation services to industries and supported technology business incubation. At present the School is part of the M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences and the University is supporting more than 135 organisations spread across the Country by providing engineering consultancy and training services through its Techno Centre division. The School was well known all over India for its application oriented postgraduate programmes.

Dr. S.R. Shankapal started his career as a lecture in the year 1984 at M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology-Bangalore. His subject areas of interest are Control Systems Engineering, Vehicle Dynamics, Automotive Power Train and Energy Conversion. He has been awarded research grants of more than Rs. 60 million from Indian government departments, industries, UKIERI and EU in the last 10 years. He has guided 5 Scholars for PhD, more than 50 postgraduate theses and around 60 undergraduate projects. He has published more than 70 research papers, 9 textbooks in Engineering, delivered more than 45 invited Lectures across the world and more than 100 training programmes for Practicing Engineers. He has been a very popular consulting engineer for companies involved in CAD/CAM/CAE services. His team has consulted more than 150 major CAD/CAE projects for various companies and research organisations.

He is a proponent of outcome based professional education and was awarded National Educational Leadership Award 2015, 2016 instituted by Vijayavani and DNA newspapers respectively. He was a merit Scholarship holder throughout his student career, won ISTE student project awards and Team Tech award for Professional Excellence and MAV-07 award, and he is a member of SAE, CI, ISTE and widely travelled to UK, Germany, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Belgium, Bulgaria, US, Russia, Nigeria, Ghana, China, Malaysia, Singapore and UAE visiting and interacting with more than 30 Global Universities.

  1. I regularly watch TED Talks- motivated by one of the ted talks, I initiated development of Robotic system to Segregate Municipal waste. This project has been developed and it segregates municipal waste with more than 95% efficiency.

  2. Motivated by one of the TED talks, initiated a project on Bionic Arm development in our biomedical Centre. The Centre develops a large number of biomedical devices driven by brain electrical signals

  3. One of the ideas is how to improve Quadcopter (Drone) weight carrying capacity to use Drone as ambulance in crowded cities like Bangalore. MSRUAS earlier M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies is one of the pioneers in Micro Air Vehicle Development in India (2006). This is also motivated by Ted Talks.

  1. Academic Benchmarks for MSRUAS
    I was appointed as Vice Chancellor M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Science with all the freedom to decide on how I should take the University forward. I decided to focus on 1. Programmes and Curriculum 2. Research 3. Human Resources. To derive benchmarks for programmes and Curriculum-after a systematic survey and research I decided to use UK based HEC and QAA literature and the information that was available on Carnegie Mellon University of the US. Today, one can observe that the education programmes and curriculum of MSRUAS is a blend of best practices of the UK, Carnegie Mellon University and the Indian Universities and that has become a differentiating factor for the University and the students and graduates are appreciative of the futuristic pedagogical methods of the University.
  2. Techno Centre at MSRUAS
    A good university must provide opportunities for its members of faculty and students to be in continuous touch with the real world and be given real life problem solving experience. It is always possible to write research proposals and get grants but providing opportunities to conceptualisation to commercialisation of a product is difficult. My observation with the UK universities is that each University has its own Techno Centre where the students are helped to develop a product, commercialise and set up their own business. I used this concept and created a Techno Centre which undertakes Industrial Research and Industrial Problem Solving, Product Development and Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship. So far this Centre has solved more than 500 projects, commercialised more than 10 products and more than 15 incubates are working. Students are given real life problems solving experience by making them solve industry problems during their assignments.
  3. Drug Design and Development Centre
    Engineers use lots of simulation tools to perfect their Engineering Design. Then why not Pharmacists. This is an idea I implemented designing of drugs through pharmacological modelling and Simulation in the Faculty of Pharmacy of University. I had to use many new ideas to motivate the members of faculty to get into the new and efficient ways of drug development in the faculty.

which helped you to acquire much extra information

  1. During one of my visits to NPOL (DRDO Laboratory) , Cochin, a scientist demonstrated me Magneto Rheological Fluid that he had developed and asking for me to suggest some application of the fluid, at once I suggested him that it can be used in semi active damper, subsequently we developed a magneto rheological automotive damper as well as vibration mounts for machines and supplied them to NPOL and some automotive research organisation. I have a patent in my name.
  2. National Design Research Forum (NDRF) , Bangalore, asked me that they are looking for Unmanned Ground Vehicle, which should travel from point A to Point B using GPS location Data and travel upto a km autonomously. We demonstrated this during Micro Air Vehicle Competition held at Agra in 2007 and won award.
  3. We have 3D printing facility. Normally we reverse engineer the engineering components, make necessary changes and build a new component. One of my Orthopaedics doctor colleague asked me whether I can develop a hemi pelvis for him in 2003. We did develop the hemi pelvis using the same idea for implantation into a patient. The pelvis was developed using DICOM scanned image data.

Striving for Accomplishing the same

The pedagogical model that I have developed for M S Ramaiah University is a unique one and futuristic. I studied the UK pedagogical models, US models particularly Carnegie University model as well as Indian higher education pedagogical Models. By studying these the best in each of these models were arrived at and the Unique MSRUAS pedagogical model was developed inserting many of my own ideas that I have gained over the years as a teacher. The model is outcome based and student Centric and teacher friendly. The model encourages thinking, innovation and creativity as well responsibility on teacher as well as student side and outcome is easily measureable. The model has been put into practice and the details are available on our university website. The members of faculty and students find this education model has opened their eyes and making them self confident and better thinkers. I believe any education system that creates self confident and thinking graduates who will create the future for others is the best.

The Persistence of Pursuing

Project-1; Establishment M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies and Successfully operated for 15 years.

In the year 1999, I established M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies, a postgraduate School offering industry relevant programmes in collaboration with a UK university and ran this till 2014 producing more than 3000 postgraduates who are all working in new economy industries, many of them in the leadership roles. This is important as I could establish run this Institution successfully without approval of any academic regulatory bodies and the graduates were really sought after by industries.

In 2013, I established M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences with the support of Chairman, Gokula Education Foundation, Bangalore. This University has been awarded with “2f” status of UGC and ranked as 90th best university in NIRF ranking 2016

The Cauldron of Conviction

When I was 39 years old, I was asked to establish M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies in Collaboration with Coventry University of UK. I had two little children one with 8 years and the other with 3 years of age,without much of support from my parents or in laws. Leaving my stable teaching job,I got into the project. I have undergone sleepless nights, insults from people, fund crunches, many a times people working for me leaving the organisation overnight and not getting my salary on time, all I have faced but I wanted prove myself that I can do things. Please note, many organisation have called me with attractive offers as I possess very strong engineering abilities and skills, but did not get attracted to any of these. I built very successful Institution in the name M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies and produced more than 3000 postgraduates to suit the new economy industries of the first decade of this Century. These graduates are enjoying the leadership positions in these industries in India and abroad.
